School Lunch Overhaul Addresses Obesity
Despite pizza being declared a vegetable last year, new dietary guidelines by the USDA, set to begin in the fall, is a step in the right direction. Finally, some progress. Government subsidized school meals will now have to add more fruits and vegetables, and reduce salt and fat. We desperately need to address our kids poor eating habits, as well as our own. Translating evidenced based nutrition standards to school foodservice as well as at home is paramount in the fight against obesity. We can look forward to double the amount of fruits and vegetables and all grains served to be whole, as well as limits on sodium, trans fats and portion control based on students ages.
Michelle Obama’s push to get our kids eating healthier, inspired by Alice Waters’s Edible Schoolyard Project, will hopefully lead to some creative approaches in getting local, sustainable, farm fresh whole foods into our kids diets.
Let’s hope it goes smoothly in our nations schools. Our kids lives depend on it.
